I like puzzles that fit in the gaps of a day: with a morning coffee, on a train, at the kitchen table while dinner is in the oven. A crossword on paper is perfect for that. No ads popping up, no battery, just a pencil and a little bit of thinking.
So I made a set of free printable crossword puzzles you can print at home in a minute. There are four puzzles at three levels, so kids and adults can each find one that feels right, and there are answer keys at the back for when someone gets stuck.

What’s inside the free crossword puzzle printable
The PDF has 7 pages on US Letter paper: a cover, four crossword puzzles and two pages of answer keys. Every grid is drawn at print resolution, so the lines and numbers stay sharp on an ordinary home printer. Each clue also shows the length of the answer in brackets, which helps a lot with the harder ones.
1. Easy: Animal Crossword for Kids (14 words)

This is the one to start with if you have young solvers. The answers are short, familiar animals like cat, frog, owl and zebra, and the clues describe what the animal does or looks like (“Bird that hoots at night”). It’s a good first crossword because kids can often guess the word from the clue and then check it with the number of boxes.
2. Medium: Food & Kitchen Crossword (15 words)

Everything in this puzzle is something you’d find in a kitchen: tools like a whisk and a spatula, foods like pancake and omelet, and a few spices. It works well for older kids and adults solving together, and it’s a nice one to leave on the counter while someone is cooking.
3. Medium: Around the World Crossword (15 words)

A geography crossword with famous cities, countries, rivers, a desert, an ocean and the world’s highest mountain. If you homeschool or teach, this one doubles as a light review activity. Keep a map or globe nearby and let kids look things up, which is half the fun.
4. Hard: General Knowledge Crossword for Adults (16 words)

The hardest grid mixes science, space, poetry and a little literature. Some answers are long (one is 14 letters), and one answer is two words written without a space. It’s still friendly, not a newspaper cryptic, but it will make most adults stop and think for a few clues.
5. Answer keys (2 pages)

All four puzzles are solved on the last two pages. If you’re printing for a class or a group, I’d print the answer pages separately (just choose pages 6–7 in your print dialog) and keep them aside until everyone is finished.
How to print the crossword puzzles
- Download the PDF with the button below and open it in a PDF reader or your browser.
- In the print settings, choose Actual size or 100% so the boxes stay a comfortable size for writing.
- Print only the pages you need. For a group, print several copies of the same puzzle so everyone can race on the same grid.
- Plain printer paper is fine. Black and white printing works too; the grids are designed to stay clear without color.
If you’re on A4 paper, choose “Fit to page”. The margins are wide, so nothing gets cut off.
Ways to use these printable crosswords
- Rainy-day or screen-free time for kids at home.
- Early finishers in a classroom. The easy and geography puzzles fit nicely in a folder of extra work.
- Travel activity: fold a couple of pages into a bag for flights, road trips or waiting rooms.
- Brain games for seniors. The general knowledge puzzle is a gentle daily challenge, and you can enlarge it with the “Fit to page” setting.
- Family game night: split into teams, set a timer and see which team fills the grid first.
Tips for solving a crossword (especially for beginners)
- Start with the clues you’re sure about and fill those in first. Every answer you add gives you letters for the words that cross it.
- Use the number in brackets. If a clue says (5) and you have two letters already, there may only be one word that fits.
- Skip and come back. It’s normal to leave a clue blank and find it easy ten minutes later.
- Solve in pencil. Crosswords are much more relaxing when you can erase.
Frequently asked questions
Are these crossword puzzles really free?
Yes. You can download, print and use them at home or in your classroom for free. Please don’t sell them or upload the PDF to other websites. If you’d like to share it, send people a link to this page instead.
What ages are the puzzles for?
The animal crossword is meant for younger readers, roughly ages 6 and up with a little help. The food and geography puzzles suit older kids and adults, and the general knowledge puzzle is aimed at teens and adults.
Can I print them in black and white?
Yes. Only the titles use color, so black and white printing works perfectly and saves ink.
